Toshiba Corp. announced it would introduce a line of 1.8inch hard disk drives (HDDs) that employ perpendicular recording technology. These products are slated for mass production in mid-2005. Toshiba said it has demonstrated the viability of this technology at 133Gbits per square inch and its commercialization raises expectations that the HDD industry will continue to grow its areal density beyond the perceived barrier of the super paramagnetic effect. The company also plans to introduce perpendicular technology in its next series of 0.85inch HDDs.
