The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), a worldwide industry-led consortium, announced that it will hold a conference entitled “Innovation for the Electronics Industry” on January 16, 2008, to mark the grand opening of its Shanghai office.
The opening of a Shanghai office is part of iNEMI’s major move to expand its reach outside its headquarters in the United States, the consortium said. Apart from China which is the focus of the Asia Pacific region, iNEMI has opened an office in Ireland recently.
Zhu Jian, Chair of the iNEMI China Steering Committee, will serve as master of ceremonies for the opening activities. Zhu is Director of PBA manufacturing for iNEMI member Alcatel- Lucent and President of SMTA China. He will be joined by Nasser Grayeli, iNEMI Chairman and Vice President, Technology & Manufacturing of Intel Corporation, Jim McElroy, CEO of iNEMI, Haley Fu, Manager of Operations of iNEMI-China; and representatives from government, academia and industry associations.
An industry forum will be held after the opening ceremony featuring two of the leading experts on environmental legislation in China. They are Huang Jianzhong Director, Bureau of Economy System Reform & Economy Operation for Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and Hongzun Zhang, a Partner with the law firm Holland & Knight. They will share their insights on the pending China RoHS legislation. Other topics to be discussed include innovation in printed wiring boards, nanotechnology, electronics R&D in greater China, lead-free challenges for high-complexity products, and reliability and quality for the global supply chain. (The full agenda is available on the iNEMI website).
iNEMI said its China Collaboration Group has been active for three years. The Shanghai office will provide a regional center to support further collaboration among members and to help recruit participation from companies in the region. In the next few months, iNEMI will be working to define regional deployment projects and to identify ways in which the China Collaboration Group can become more involved with, and provide support for, existing iNEMI activities. iNEMI will also be looking for opportunities to interface and work closely with other industry associations and consortia in China.
Those interested in attending the opening ceremony and industry forum should contact Haley Fu (haley.fu@inemi.org) or Beili Chow (beili.chow@vivacorp.com.cn).
