Electronic Business 2007 Top R&D spenders

by Ben Beutler, Research Projects Editor
1 April 2008
EB ranks the R&D spending leaders in the electronics industry, looking at their R&D investments as a percentage of their annual revenues.

Many say that R&D is one cornerstone of an innovative company. Reinvesting company revenue into R&D can have big benefits for a company and the industry as a whole.

And for the US, which is the world leader in terms of R&D investment (followed by China and Japan, respectively), it is another way to stay on top as technological leaders.

The following chart ranks the companies by their investment in R&D as a percentage of their annual revenues. Doing it this way levels the playing field so that a company like SMIC (No.102) with R&D spending of $93.9 million can rank higher than a heavy hitter like Siemens (No.117) with R&D spending of $6.4 billion. The chart shows 2006 figures only.
