Motorola announces that it has inaugurated the Motorola manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, Chennai, marking 20 years of the company’s presence in India.
With an initial investment of $43.1 million, the Motorola owned and operated facility supports an integrated telecom products portfolio. This includes GSM and CDMA mobile devices and networking equipment such as base stations and system controllers. The facility, spread over 270,000 square feet, has a capacity of producing over 12 million mobile phones and 6,500 base terminal stations each year.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, congratulated Motorola: “It is a historic day for Tamil Nadu that a global telecom leader like Motorola is opening its manufacturing facility. With this, Tamil Nadu now has all the global telecom leaders with manufacturing facilities here. I am happy that Chennai has become a global hub for electronics and telecom manufacturing.”
EL Tay, Corporate Vice President, Asia, Supply Chain, said “We have been present in India for over 20 years. Inauguration of the manufacturing facility is a milestone event for Motorola and recognizes the importance of India and the state of Tamil Nadu. These are exciting times for the Indian economy at large and the telecom sector in specific. We are proud to be part of this growth story.”
“The telecom market in India is expanding at a rapid pace and this facility will help us provide customers with compelling products, competitively priced with local content, timely delivery and improved availability,” said Sammy Sana, Country President, Motorola India.
Focusing on Motorola’s commitment to environmental protection, several green initiatives have been established in the new facility. The plant has implemented rain water harvesting capable of collecting 10,000 kilo liters of water. A green belt surrounding the premises is currently under development, covering approximately 120,000 square feet. The facility, certified for ISO 9001, has recently applied for the LEED’s Rating Certification from the India Green Buildings Council (IGBC).
