With Taiwanese PCB (printed circuit board) makers gradually switching operation focus back to the island, Unimicron Technology Corp, a leading maker in the line, is reportedly to spend about NT$4 billion on expanding the capacity of its plant in Taiwan.
Strict environment impact assessment and new tax laws in China have undermined Taiwanese PCB makers' latest plans to expand their production capacity in eastern China and southern China regions. As a result, Unimicron has decided to raise its investment in Taiwan starting this year to account for over 60 percent of its capital expense budget of NT$6 billion for the year to improve production capacity of both substrates and general PCBs.
Worth mentioning is that if the PCB market booms in the second half of this year, Unimicron will even consider boosting its maximum single-month capacity of flip-chip substrates to between 8 million and 10 million units.
Unimicron had invested in capacity expansion in China more than it had done in Taiwan over the past five years. However, the situation has reversed when the company already resolves to raise a portion of its investment in Taiwan to up to 66 percent of the total this year. The move is seen as an encouragement to other Taiwanese PCB companies operating in China, who have planned to refocus operations in Taiwan.
