Belgian-based research lab IMEC and Taiyo Nippon Sanso have signed an agreement to develop manufacturing technology for high efficiency green LEDs.
This is the first time Taiyo Nippon Sanso, which supplies manufacturing equipment to compound semiconductor makers, has collaborated with a European research center.
“This relationship with IMEC will enable Taiyo Nippon Sanso to position itself as a leading MOCVD tool maker in the LED compound semiconductor market,” said Mike Hara, MD of Taiyo.
The manufacturing technology will be based mainly on IMEC’s compound semiconductors knowledge, building on its expertise in strain engineering on large wafers, supported by in-situ growth monitoring.
According to IMEC, there is an increasing demand to develop brighter green LEDs for LCD TV backlights.
