Highlights From Mobile World Congress 2009: Changes in China Perceptions, Smartphones Everywhere

17 February 2009

What is hot in the mobile world in 2009? Carsten Barth, Director, Marketing and Communications, Elcoteq SE, sends these highlights from the showfloor:
  • China is more and more perceived as a market and a home of world class and leading OEM's, not only a manufacturing location.

  • China Mobile reveals its "opening" its new business model, including the launch of an Android-based software platform.

  • Smartphones are everywhere, and the iPhone is clearly the benchmark. But not only the mobile devices, also the operating systems are key. Nokia, Microsoft, Apple and Google are the major players. Android phones and applications are largely present.

  • The communication infrastructure community is highlighting LTE - Long Term Evolution, the next major technological advancement for the wireless industry and is designed to deliver dramatic increase in download and upload rates.

  • "This year will undoubtedly be one of the most challenging for the world economy in living memory but ITC industries are likely to be amongst those least affected. They also have the potential to be a driving force behind the recovery. Infrastructure spending has been identified by leading economists as a vital impetus and in the 21st century the information superhighways are equally important as the physical ones and Mobile Broadband and its burgeoning ecosystems is at the forefront on this" says Robert G Conway, CEO and Member of the board of the GSM Association, in his editorial to the GSMA Mobile World Congress.
