Altek Corp, one of Taiwan`s leading assemblers of digital still camera (DSC), has become the biggest of its kind worldwide by exceeding Sanyo of Japan and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co of Taiwan, according to a report by the Japan-based market researcher Techno Systems Research Inc (TSR).
The TSR report shows the world`s top five ODMs (original design manufacturer) of DSC, in descending order, as Altek, Sanyo, Hon Hai, Ability, and Flextronics, last year.
In terms of shipments of own-branded products, Altek was the world`s third largest last year, only behind Canon and Sony.
Altek is leading the segment for the first time as an ODM and the third largest shipper of DSCs since its establishment 12 years ago, showing its world class standard in manufacturing. The company said it registered historic highs in shipments, sales and profits (excluding employee bonus) last year.
Altek believes it can expand world market shares after becoming the world`s No.1 ODM because some own-branded big names worldwide are increasing outsourcing to slash production costs.
The company scored NT$1.062 billion in consolidated sales in May, compared to NT$1.036 billion ($31.58 million) in the preceding month. Although the company had NT$3.56 billion ($108.53 million) in consolidated sales in the first quarter of this year, it posted only NT$2.098 billion ($63.96 million) in cumulative consolidated sales in both April and May, so it would be hard for the company to see second quarter sales exceed that of the preceding quarter.
