With LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs gradually gaining popularity, emerging markets are expected to absorb 50 percent of global shipments of the products by 2011, according to the latest survey released by Topology Research Institute (TRI).
TRI estimated that around 1.74 billion LCD TVs were in demand worldwide, based on a 13 percent contribution of such product to the total TV sales globally in 2008. Also, LCD TVs command market shares of less than 30 percent in such developed countries as Japan, the US and Europe, and below 10 percent in emerging countries.
Despite declining by 22 percent in the first quarter of this year, TRI indicated, the global shipment of LCD TVs is expected to surge 30 percent for entire the year, thanks to increasingly strong consumer demand in China and Latin America, which will fuel global shipments in the second half.
At the moment, North America remains the largest consumer market for LCD TVs globally, absorbing 27.4 percent of the global shipment in the first quarter of this year. However, TRI noted that China, with its economy continuing growing at a strong pace, is very likely to outpace North America as the largest market of this kind by 2011.
