Actively engaged in development of high end smartphones, Taiwan-based Compal Communications Inc has recently won contract orders from Motorola and Kyocera Communications for handsets based on Google`s Android platform, effectively infusing growth momentum into its sales revenue for the fourth quarter of this year.
With intense promotion, Google`s Android smartphone platform has been widely adopted by globally famous handset brands, including its co-developer High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) of Taiwan and Samsung of Korea, in their smartphones. Also, LG and Motorola are scheduled to launch their models by the end of this year. This has forced Taiwanese contract suppliers, who have concentrated on production of mobile phones suited for Microsoft`s Windows Mobile for years, to switch their focus to Android-based models.
Among them, Compal Communications has been upgrading its production of low end feature phones into high end smartphones since two years ago, and hence successfully landed contract orders for Android-based handsets from its major client Motorola and Japan`s Kyocera Communications, which are slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year. At present, the company`s production lines are almost booked for entry-level mobile phones through the end of the third quarter.
In addition to Android-based models, the firm also supplies common smartphones, with Motorola, HP, Palm, Acer and LG on its client list. In short, the product line will serve as the major sales booster, very likely to help the firm turn around starting the fourth quarter.
After scoring sales revenue of NT$2.39 billion in June, down 4.6 percent from a year ago but sharply up 46.7 percent from a month earlier, Compal Communications reported aggregate revenue of NT$12.103 billion for the first half of the year, sagging 31.3 percent from a year earlier. In the meantime, the firm shipped 9.03 million handsets in the first half, including 4.7 million units in the second quarter.
