MARKET TRENDS > JULY 2009

Top 10 LCD TV Brands Optimistic About Market in 2010

28 July 2009

Despite market uncertainty in the fourth quarter of this year, it seems that the world`s top 10 LCD (liquid crystal display) TV brands are all optimistic about market prospects in 2010, as shown in the growth projection of shipments for the year that averages 35 percent, according DisplaySearch.

The top 10 LCD TV brands, including Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp, Philips, Vizio, Toshiba, Panasonic, TCL and Funai, have respectively announced shipment projections for 2010 and, expect to totally ship 141.5 million units with a 96 percent share of the global market in the year. By 2010, the global market is estimated to grow by 17 percent to 148 million units.

Somewhat unfazed by the global financial tsunami, global shipment of LCD TVs totaled 26.7 million units in the first quarter, with 21 million units, or 79 percent, of the total sold by the top 10 brands. DisplaySearch projects global sales of LCD TV to reach about 127 million units for 2009, up 21 percent from 2008, and the top 10 brands to supply 83 percent or 104.8 million units.

For example, Samsung projects its annual LCD TV shipment to grow to 25 million this year and 32 million units next year, representing a 19 and 28 percent growth, respectively, from 2008 and 2009, while LG ambitiously plans to achieve a 50 percent growth in both 2009 and 2010 shipment to 16 million and 24 million units to unseat Sony as No.2.

Vizio, US-based sales arm of Taiwan-based TV maker, AmTran Technology Co Ltd, also aims for a 126 percent growth in its LCD TV shipment to 7 million units for this year, and 43 percent to 10 million units next year.
