Acer to Release Big-Ticket Order for 2010 Notebook PC Models

3 August 2009

All the world`s top three notebook PC brands are expected to release contract orders for more than 100 million units for sales in 2010, with Taiwan`s four major contract assemblers poised to scramble for the orders.

Currently, the world`s top three notebook PC vendors are HP, Acer and Dell, which have announced annual shipment goals for 2010 at 40 million, 33 million to 37 million, and 30 million units, respectively.

Industry sources said that Acer would soon choose contract suppliers of 20 million notebook PCs to be delivered in the first half of 2010. Industry insiders said that Compal Electronics Inc. is likely to win more than 30 percent of the big-ticket first-half order from Acer, Quanta Computer Inc and Wistron Corp each to grasp close to 30 percent of the orders, and Inventec Corp 10 percent.

Quanta, the world`s largest notebook PC contract manufacturer, has won a big order from HP. Compal is expected to win more order volume from Dell, which is to more actively tap the business models, industry sources said. Quanta is expected to enjoy the highest growth ratio among counterparts.

Institutional investors estimated that Compal has the chance to win 35 percent of Acer`s first-half ordered volume of 20 million units. Wistron is expected to supply about 25 to 30 percent of Acer`s annual shipments this year. So, the investors said, Wistron`s shipments this year are expected to stay at a level similar to last year`s.

Inventec would still be out of Acer`s major contract-supplier list and is estimated to supply about 10 percent of Acer`s overall shipments in 2010.
