MARKET TRENDS > OCTOBER 2009

130M LCD TVs Forecast to be Shipped This Year: DisplaySearch

12 October 2009

DisplaySearch, a major global player in display market research and consulting, recently raised its 2009 global LCD TV shipment forecast to 130 million units from 127 million units, for an annual growth of 24 percent.

The market research firm explained that strong LCD TV shipment growth during the second quarter in key markets like China and North America, as well as the prospect for continuing growth during the rest of the year motivated such adjustment.

The forecast for TV shipments of all display technologies in 2009 was reduced from the previous forecast by 3 percent to 195 million units for a 5 percent shipment decline from 2008, DisplaySearch said, as the market for traditional cathode-ray tube (CRT) TVs is declining faster than previously expected, and the growth in flat panel TVs is not strong enough to fully compensate such fall.

According to Hisakazu Torii, Vice President of TV research at DisplaySearch, the transition from CRT-based TVs to flat panel TVs is largely complete in developed regions worldwide, like North America, Western Europe and Japan. Now the transition to flat TV is accelerating in emerging markets like China, and we are seeing sales of CRT TVs fall faster than flat panel TVs can grow, mostly due to supply constraints in LCD TV, he added.

The increase in global LCD TV shipment expectations for the remainder of 2009 and beyond is a positive trend for the industry. Even so, the market research firm said, the price of LCD panels used in TVs has been rising sharply in recent months, effectively increasing the cost of producing LCD TVs. Despite this, LCD TV average selling prices (ASPs) continue to erode by an expected 22 percent YoY in 2009.

The large screen portion of the LCD TV market, defined as 40-inch and larger, is expected to grow 25 percent YoY in 2009, which is about half the pace of 2008 growth. By contrast, the under-40-inch LCD TV shipment volume is expected to grow 23 percent in 2009, similar to 2008 growth levels.
