PRINT EDITION > JULY 2011

Tom Scimeca, President, FCT Asia, talks about taking various types of products to market in Asia.

1 July 2011
He also shares his observations about the current state of PCB manufacturing in the region and future growth drivers of the electronics assembly industry.

EM Asia: Give us a brief overview on the formation of FCT Asia and the products that it offers for the electronics industry.

Scimeca: FCT Asia was formed with the idea of taking some of our products to market in Asia. We started by focusing on the China market. We are quite flexible in the types of products and markets we decide to sell and support in Asia. Currently, we are focused on final finishes for the PC FAB market and the Nihon Superior SN100C lead-free solder, a uniquely qualified lead-free solder that can be for both hot air level and wave solder applications. We are looking at extending our business to other products including imaging products such as our unique liquid photoresists and VOC-free conformal coatings. We will disclose more on this in the near future.

EM Asia: How do you see the PCB market in Asia evolving?

Scimeca: The PCB manufacturing market in Asia and in particular China is large and seems to continue gaining worldwide market share. I see the PCB market growing due to the rising middle class of China and growth of other emerging markets. I question whether it can continue with the rate of growth it has experienced over the last 10 years. China seems to continue offering a compelling mix of low labor costs combined with a qualified labor force and good infrastructure. Additionally, there are willing investors from seasoned PC FAB and assembly manufacturers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Europe and North America who both understand and are comfortable operating in China.

Most likely there will be some movement within China as some large companies move their manufacturing from the more costly coastal regions to other low-cost areas within China.

We also expect to see multinational companies diversifying their manufacturing base by moving some of their manufacturing outside of China to countries like Vietnam. This may accelerate depending on factors such as the RMB exchange rate and overall inflation in China. Things should get interesting in the next five years.

EM Asia: In the assembly market, tell us about your partnerships and new product developments.

Scimeca: We work with a number of distributors for both the assembly and PC FAB markets. In the assembly market, our two main distributors are Electroloy and Sigma. We are selling the SN100 lead-free solder as well as some SN100 solder wire. We are working hard on getting our FCT Assembly pin testable and halidefree solder pastes approved by major OEMs. Most of these solder pastes also are based on the SN100 solder alloy. This work requires a special commitment since the approval process can be quite lengthy.

EM Asia: Where do you manufacture in China?

Scimeca: We are able to manufacture our assembly and PC FAB products at three locations in the Guangzhou region and in one plant in Kunsan near Shanghai. We have enough manufacturing capacity for our current sales activities both now and in the near future.

EM Asia: How are you positioning the company as a solder materials and PCB chemicals supplier in the region?

Scimeca: We want to be known as a company that brings interesting technology coupled with excellent technical support. We also feel it is important to have good communications and timely response with major OEMs, wherever they may be located.

EM Asia: Which segments do you see driving significant growth in the industry?

Scimeca: The assembly and PC FAB markets are to some extent mature. The real growth will be in new nascent industries such as the LED and solar markets. Both of these industries have many similarities to both the electronics assembly and PC FAB industry. It will be interesting to see how companies reposition themselves to the emergence of these new industries both in a movement of resources and in the development of new productsand technologies.
